office 365 business review

Microsoft Office 365 Platform is rapidly becoming a standard in the market, replacing on premise email systems.  This article will identify the 3 basic types of O365 and the benefits of the different products categories.

Microsoft has segmented Office 365 into businesses and organizations below 300 employees with the Business” moniker, and those above 300 employees with the “E” or Enterprise name.

Further product segmentation is based around the service itself.   In this article we will focus our attention on the “Business” Product set or organizations under 300 employees.  The products breakdown as follows:

  • Office 365 Business Essentials is an online version of Office 365 featuring email and Microsoft Office online with Microsoft Teams collaboration and Microsoft One Drive, featuring one TB of storage.
  • Office 365 Business Premium combines the two plans above to give you the full Microsoft communication platform, along with the Office licensing locally on your device.
  • Microsoft 365 Business recently updated, provides the communication product suite, the full Microsoft Office licensing service, and also adds in advanced security features, Active Directory integration and management tools.

How to Optimize Your O365 Service

If you are an organization that has been using Microsoft 0365 for over 12 months chances are that there have been changes to both your organization, and to the Microsoft 0365 platform that should prompt you to review your existing services.

Your review should start with your employees, and the services that they are using.   Your company may still be paying for employees that have left your organization.  You also may have employees that are not using certain subscription services in their O365 plan, or may have outgrown the plan they initially were mapped to, and need to be reset.  In almost all cases it benefits your organization to make certain that you make an ANNUAL commitment, due to the discount that Microsoft throws in, but pay monthly for the service.

Microsoft recently announced a change to O365 under 300 plans, with the introduction of Microsoft 365 Business plan, which combines advanced security and device management options to the Office 365 Business Premium plan.   The plan features look good, but the pricing is high, at 20.00/ user per month, 7.50 more than the Business Premium price of 12.50/ user.

In most cases there are other market options that will work better from email security vendors at a price of  3.00-4.00 per month, about half of the increase that Microsoft want you to pay for Microsoft 365.  These options are largely in the email security area, and are in general, more robust than Microsoft’s offerings here.   Anyone doing an O365 review should spend the time reviewing email security services that attach to Office 365.   In our next post we will take a closer look at the Enterprise plans and how to review the subscription services.
